Poetry Day Ireland

Poetry Day Ireland takes place on Thursday 28th April. Poetry related events will take place all over the country.  The theme this year is “Written in the Stars”.  Mountshannon Arts have four events planned  to celebrate the day.

How much is our destiny decided for us… An Evening of Poetry

Under the Oak - 7pm

We will have an evening of poetry and discussion in Under the Oak Café, where we will explore the theme from the perspective of “How much is our destiny decided for us, and how much can we influence our own destiny”. We are delighted to be joined by local poet Sarah Clancy, who we have wanted to bring to Mountshannon for several years and Nqobizitha Vella, a feminist born and raised in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

The evening will take place in an informal way, where you can sip on a glass of wine, or other drink, whilst listening to, and taking part in the discussion, and if anyone would like to contribute with their own poetry, or a piece of poetry that you feel relates to the theme, then that would be very welcome.

Ticket price €10 includes a selection of Peggy’s amazing Tapas which will be available after the discussion, when we can mingle and talk further.

She has published three collections of poetry Stacey and the Mechanical Bull (Lapwing Belfast) Thanks for Nothing Hippies (Salmon Poetry) and The Truth and Other Stories (Salmon Poetry). She has been involved in many campaigns in Ireland over the years including campaigns for environmental justice, bodily autonomy, marriage equality, and the campaign to end direct provision.

Nqobizitha Vella

Nqobizitha Vella, a feminist born and raised in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, is an author, poet, and student of Film and Screen Media at University College Cork. She came to Ireland as an asylum seeker and lived in the Direct Provision system for three years, which is where she published her first novel in Ndebele titled UMENDO SO! In Cork, she has worked with Goodday Cork, Fiction at the Friary, Cork City Libraries, The Soundseekers, and O’Bheal Cork Poetry Events, to name a few. She loves arts, and to her, arts give meaning to life.
