I am Bird
I Am Bird is a photographic installation by interdisciplinary artist and photographer Avia Gurman Murphy. The work explores four interconnected stories of freedom, belonging, and the desire to become more-than-human - to become a bird - reflecting a longing to move beyond fixed identities, borders, and human constraints.
Developed in collaboration with members of the East Clare community - Tara Petra Vidova, Geoff Brennan, Justine Cooper, Joseph, Abiola, and Priscilla Idowu - the project brings together personal narratives of movement, migration, and the search for place. These stories are both documented and embodied, emerging through a process that combines photography, ritual, and shared experience.
Printed on fabric and installed within the maze in Mountshannon, the images exist in dialogue with the natural elements - moved by wind, marked by rain, and shaped by light. The exhibition becomes a living, shifting environment, echoing the transient and interconnected nature of human and more-than-human life.
This site-specific installation was specially commissioned by the Mountshannon Arts Festival and supported through Creative Bursaries from Clare County Council.
